Thanks to all the storekeepers in Grand-Charmont and the Pays de Montbéliard who were kind enough to answer our questions. Here is what they think of the passage to the Euro:

Michel
Beltzung runs the pharmacy "Les Fougères". He
is favorable to the passage to the euro, because
according to him, the Europe of countries is directly
connected to the Europe of the currency. Furthermore, not
much embarrassment for him about the passage to the euro.
He didn't need to equip himself with new material, there
is no queue in the pharmacy. First week, 50 % of people
still paid in francs, but since January 10, almost 100 %
of them pay in euros. |
||||||||||||
Customers
and employees there seem to have put themselves into it
without any trouble. To work with euros is a pleasure,
because notes are beautiful. Coins, on the other hand,
are too uniform. But, apart from that, in the pharmacy "Les Fougères", it is the quiet euro |

David Vernier is a cash manager in the Super U of Sochaux. It is a small supermarket, with a custom from the neighbourhood, and the Euro will not bring to it a big advantage. However, David Vernier was favorable to the passage, because he thinks that it is going to increase the consumption.
This young customer doesn't seem bothered at all to pay in Euros (needless to say that the cashier is charming), but it is not the case of certain old persons. Very often, they give their purse to the cashier so that she uses herself. Anyway, some customers already did it before the Euro...
At Super U, prices are in Euro, in the shop as well as in filling station. Sure, we are going to have to get used to it: The 1 Euro gasoline, the 70 cents diesel oil ... It is true that you feel like taking more of it !

Judith Aubry was against the passage in the Euro. For her, the franc was a symbol of our country. On a practical plan, even if she did not need to equip with new material, she regrets queues caused by the change of currency. There are customers who get lost there and even sometimes employees. But little by little, people put themselves into the Euro. In mid-January, only 10 % are still provided with French Francs.
The only advantage she sees in the
Euro, is the ease of traffic in Europe that it will
allow. In the meantime, her customers grumble a little to handle yellow coins when they purchase at small shopkeepers.... |

We are
welcomed by Mrs Christine Treppo, commercial responsible
for the bank. As a specialist in Economics, Mrs Treppo is
favorable to the euro because it will be a strong
currency for France, which can be only positive. In this bank, the passage to the euro was a critical period: A "Euro Information Desk" was set up, held by a person recruited specially. Several new equipments were necessary, and the staff worked overtime. From first till 15 January, it was the big boom: queues, supplementary work. |
|||||||||||||
People
wanted to change their francs ! Nevertheless, in
December, the 100 F " euro kits " had been
successful: All sold, in the fortnight. If some customers
still have difficulties in adapting to the European
currency, it's not the same for the staff: it has been
prepared for a long time. Dealing with two currencies
simply asks for a little more attention. Mrs Treppo thinks that the euro will be a real advantage for her customers who travel in Europe: No more worries about changing money. Even old persons will get used to it. One of them hoped to have died before the passage to the euro. But she is still alive, and getting used to it little by little |

Didier and
Catherine Hamann are the managers of the restaurant the
Harlequin in Vieux-Charmont. They were in favour of the
passage in the euro because they have German, Spanish,
Italian and Portuguese customers. They also receive
people from England and Switzerland. They also think
about the future of their children, for whom Europe will
be easier, with a single currency. Two years ago, when they changed their cash-register, the Hamann anticipated : they bought a device already programmed for the euro. Recently, they have simply had to equip with a forger to return euros. |
||||||||||||
In January
2002, 90 % of the customers already paid in euros. Most
use their credit card to avoid errors. The employees of
the restaurant are in no way confused. Needless to say
their salaries have been paid in euros for 8 months
For our friends restaurant owners, the passage to the euro incites a little to the consumption, because people have no impression to pay dearly. The only inconvenience which they see is that there are many different coins difficult to distinguish straight off from eye. The passage to the euro was done gently : Only error the first day of the euro : A customer ordered a 10 F ice-cream. The waiter brought in 10 euro: a little bit expensive ! |

Marie
Roblin is both at the same time a saleswoman and a
bookkeeper in the bakery. At first, she was against the
passage in the euro because she knew that it would
represent over-work. But 3 weeks after dealing with the
single currency, she thinks hard times are gone. Mrs Roblin had to equip with a new cash register capable of counting in francs and in euros. Lines were sometimes endless because the customers had difficulty in recognizing the cents of euro, and they verified the money which was returned to them, especially when they paid in francs. |
||||||||||||
Fortunately,
90 % of them are already provided with euros. The big
advantage of the euro is that the customers who work in
the bordering countries have only a single currency. It
is quite usual now. The main inconvenience is the
multiplicity of coins and the return of the 1-centime
coins, that had not been seen for 30 years ! Finally, the passage to the euro will be remembered. For example, this customer who wanted to pay his baguette half in francs and half in euro. All this with a long line of pressing people: imagine the puzzle! ! ! |
